If you’re pregnant and considering hiring a birth doula, you might be wondering: When is the best time to book one?
Should you start looking as soon as you see that positive pregnancy test? Wait until your second trimester? Or can you hire a doula when you’re just weeks away from delivery?
The good news is that there’s no single perfect time to hire a doula. However, booking earlier can give you more time to build a relationship with your birth team, prepare for labor, and feel confident heading into your delivery.
At What The Bump CLT, we support families throughout Charlotte, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. Here’s what we recommend when deciding when to hire a birth doula.
For most families, the second trimester (around 12–24 weeks) is a great time to start looking for a doula.
By this point, you may have started thinking more seriously about your birth preferences, where you plan to deliver, and what kind of support you’d like during labor.
Hiring a doula during your second trimester gives you plenty of time to:
It’s also helpful to remember that doulas typically accept a limited number of births each month to accommodate the unpredictable timing of labor.
Booking earlier may give you more options when choosing the doula who’s the best fit for your family- it is never TOO early!
Absolutely!
Some families know right away that they want a doula, especially if they’ve had a previous birth experience where they wished they’d had additional support.
Hiring a doula early in pregnancy can be especially beneficial if you’re hoping to have someone to turn to with questions from the start, help you navigate your options, and provide continuous emotional support throughout pregnancy.
A doula doesn’t replace your OB-GYN or midwife, but they are a valuable addition to your birth team.
Not at all!
One of the most common misconceptions about hiring a birth doula is that you need to book months in advance.
While earlier is often better for availability, you can absolutely hire a doula at 30, 35, or even 38 weeks pregnant!
Even if you have only a few weeks before your due date, your doula can help you prepare for labor, discuss your birth preferences, and understand what to expect during delivery.
If you’re nearing your due date and haven’t found a doula yet, don’t hesitate to reach out. Once we got hired by a mama at 39 weeks and she had her baby only 36 hours after hiring our team! We scheduled her prenatal the SAME DAY she hired us because we knew baby would be arriving soon!
If you’re planning to deliver at a Charlotte-area hospital, having a doula can be beneficial regardless of whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, an induction, or a scheduled cesarean.
Many families assume doulas are only for natural or unmedicated births, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
A birth doula provides:
Whether you’re delivering at Atrium Health, Novant Health, home, or a local birth center, your doula can help you feel supported and informed throughout the process, subject to your hospital’s current support-person policies.
Once you’ve chosen your doula, the next step is preparing together for your birth.
At What The Bump CLT, we believe that a great doula relationship begins long before labor.
During your prenatal visits you’ll have opportunities to discuss your goals, ask questions, explore comfort measures, and talk through your birth preferences.
Our team includes experienced birth doulas and professionals with nursing backgrounds, bringing a combination of compassionate support and evidence-informed education to the families we serve.
Our goal isn’t to tell you how you should give birth. It’s to help you feel informed, confident, and supported in the decisions that are right for you.
That’s completely normal. We actually wrote a blog “Is Hiring a Doula Worth It?” on this exact topic!
You don’t have to know exactly what kind of birth you want before reaching out to a doula.
In fact, many families begin exploring doula support because they have questions about labor, pain management, hospital birth options, or how their partner can be involved.
A consultation is a great opportunity to learn more about what a doula does, ask questions, and decide whether additional support feels right for your family.
There’s no pressure to have everything figured out before that first conversation.
Whether you’re newly pregnant or just weeks away from meeting your baby, we’d love to connect with you.
At What The Bump CLT, our birth doula team supports families throughout Charlotte and surrounding communities with compassionate, personalized, evidence-informed care.
We believe every family deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported throughout pregnancy and birth.
